HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EVENT OF COURTESY VISIT OF UGONSA NATIONAL LEADERSHIP TO THE REGISTRAR OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL OF NIGERIA ON 6TH JULY, 2017

1.    Quackery: Fighting quackery is a team work. States Nursing and Midwifery committee have fighting quackery in their domains as part of their responsibilities. Having a portal for online verification of valid licences, via the use of registration pin, as demanded by UGONSA is possible. As UGONSA is putting together a pragmatic template for crushing quackery which it shall avail to the council, it is enjoined help awaken the States Directors of Nursing Services (DNS) to their responsibilities of fighting quackery in their domains and also help mobilize support for them to wage an effective war against quackery.
2.    Categorization of Register: There is already a class difference as evidenced by the clauses in the extant circulars that define our service schemes. There is no comprehensive data at present on proportion of nurses that have degree and post-graduate degrees in nursing sciences. Work is on going on Professional Update Forms that shall collate statistics of different categories and educational qualifications of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives. In the near future, it will be possible to get the Statistics of number of nurses that constitute different categories of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives in the council’s website.
3.    Internship: Contrary to fact of having 22 Teaching Hospitals as the only accredited institutions for graduate nurses internship training as published in the council’s implementation guide for the internship programme, it was disclosed that council has not restricted internship training to only the teaching hospitals. Consequently, Federal Medical Centres and General Hospitals that have the capacity to run internship training are free to do so.
4.    Continuing Education Units (CEUs): CEUs are awarded on merit as stipulated on the guidelines in council’s website. UGONSA application for award of CEUs for its National Professional Conference and Scientific Updates has been received and necessary actions are ongoing. Efforts of UGONSA are appreciated and advise was given to carry others nurses along.
